Shared taxis and minibuses fill the intercity gap: bush taxis (taxi-brousse) run fixed routes between major towns and depart when full rather than on a set schedule, making journey times unpredictable. Budget extra time for any overland travel. For visitors who prefer the comfort of a private vehicle, metered or negotiated taxis are available in Lomé and can be hired by the hour or half-day for city exploration. Renting a car with a local driver is a practical option for reaching sites outside the capital, as road quality varies considerably once you leave main routes. Avoid assuming that Google Maps travel times translate to reality — road conditions, vehicle age, and border formalities can all extend journeys significantly. From Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport (Lomé-Tokoin), taxis into the city center are the standard arrival option. Agree on a price before departing the terminal — there is no metered system in operation here — and expect economy-range fares for the short transfer into central Lomé. Organized transfers can also be arranged through accommodation.
